FAQs // Schlüter-DITRA-HEAT-DUO-PS

Below, Schlüter-Systems answers some of the common installer questions in relation to DITRA-HEAT-DUO-PS and outlines best practice for installation.

Electric underfloor heating continues to grow in popularity, particularly for retrofit and refurbishment projects where fast installation and predictable performance are essential. Schlüter-Systems’ DITRA-HEAT-DUO-PS has been developed with the installer in mind, combining uncoupling, thermal efficiency and a Peel & Stick fixing method in one system.

Q. What is DITRA-HEAT-DUO-PS?
DITRA-HEAT-DUO-PS is an uncoupling membrane with a pressure sensitive adhesive on the underside with integrated impact sound reduction and thermal insulation properties. It is designed to house the Schlüter-DITRA-HEAT electric heating cable and is suitable for tiled floors and walls.

Q. What does the ‘DUO’ layer do?
The DUO fleece on the underside improves thermal efficiency by pushing heat into the covering on initial start-up, helping the system warm up faster. It also provides impact sound reduction, making it ideal for apartments and hotels.

Q. How does the ‘PS’ fixing method help installers?
The Peel & Stick (PS) adhesive backing eliminates the need to apply tile adhesive when fixing the membrane to the substrate. This significantly reduces installation time and on-site mess, helping installers complete projects more efficiently and maximise their earning potential.

Q. Can I use DITRA-HEAT-DUO-PS on the wall?
DITRA-HEAT-DUO-PS would only be suitable for floor applications – standard DITRA-HEAT should be used for wall applications, applied with a suitable cement based tile adhesive.

Q. I have a P5 chipboard floor, would DITRA-HEAT-DUO-PS be suitable?
Yes, however, please ensure the surface is clean, dry and dust free.

Q. The membrane is not sticking and is not sticky on the back. Why is this?
The membrane needs to be acclimatised to room temperature for 24 hours before installation.

Q. Can I install the heating cable at 2 studs apart?
No, the heating cable should be installed every three studs apart for floor applications.

Step-by-step installation overview:

1 Ensure the substrate is flat, load bearing, clean and free from dust or grease, and dry.
2 Cut the DITRA-HEAT-DUO-PS membrane to size and peel away the protective film.
3 Firmly press the membrane onto the substrate, ensuring full contact, noting that the membrane can be lifted and repositioned as required until full contact has been achieved.
4 Install the DITRA-HEAT heating cable into the studs, following the required spacing for heat output.
5 Install the floor temperature sensor and connect to the appropriate thermostat.
6 Tile directly onto the membrane using a suitable tile adhesive.

Q. Where is it best used?
DITRA-HEAT-DUO-PS is particularly suited to renovation projects, bathrooms, kitchens and living spaces where minimal build-up, rapid installation and energy efficiency are priorities.
