Could MLCP be a cost-effective alternative to copper?

High copper prices may lead installers to consider other solutions and one alternative could be Multilayer Composite Pipes (MLCP). The FRÄNKISCHE UK MLCP solution is marketed under the trade name alpex™ and the company says, “MLCP can be used in many of the same applications as copper pipe, while crucially offering a more cost-effective alternative.”

Matt Densham, Divisional Director – Building Services at FRÄNKISCHE UK, comments: “Copper is an essential metal when electrical conductivity or high-temperature performance is needed. It is widely used within construction, heating applications, green technologies (including EVs), refrigeration and HVAC systems. However, its soaring cost has meant that specifiers and end-users are looking at alternative materials for some common applications.

“A recent quotation for a typical UK home where we compared copper with MLCP showed a saving of between 40-50% for the whole system. The alpex™ MLCP also came in more competitive vs a standard plastic pipe solution”

Matt added: “Over the last decade, MLCP has become increasingly recognised for its flexibility and ease of installation. As a press-fit system, MLCP requires no soldering or hot works, offers a degree of flexibility meaning less fittings and is far lighter and easier to move around a site or building. All these benefits contribute to reduced installation times. In addition, the real concern of on-site theft is removed.

“For a fitter, it’s not just a question of the initial price of the material. It is important to consider the whole process, including material costs, the tools needed to undertake the work and transportation costs, while keeping an eye on the fluctuating price of copper.

“Ordering copper in bulk and storing it for future use could potentially save a company a significant amount of money if prices continue to rise. Conversely, a major fall in prices could prove to be a costly mistake.

“A specifier, contractor or installer needs to protect themselves from fluctuating copper prices, but buying for the future at today’s prices is a big gamble.

“Therefore, MLCP pipe can remove all of this uncertainty, reduce exposure to potentially costly market fluctuations and provide a considerable cost saving. When comparing MLCP with copper, specifiers and installers should look beyond the price per metre and consider the total installed cost. With the price of plastic being less volatile the potential savings that can be realised by using MLCP instead of copper will only increase further if the current uncertainty continues to increase prices for copper. Now should be the time for installers to take a closer look at the alpex™ MLCP with Frankische’s technical leadership & support from our UK team who will help answer any question or address any concern.”
