FAQ // Smart underfloor heating controls

Myson provides some answers to frequently asked questions about smart underfloor heating controls.

Modern underfloor heating systems are typically controlled with individual room thermostats that allow users to set their preferred comfort temperature and programme heating schedules. Smart underfloor heating controls take this a step further by offering management of both energy use and indoor climate comfort.

Q. Why choose smart underfloor heating controls?
Smart underfloor heating controls provide next-level precision, helping users optimise energy consumption while maintaining consistent comfort. With solutions such as the Myson Unisenza Plus range, homeowners can tailor their heating system to their needs and living patterns.

Room-by-room programming ensures that underfloor heating is activated only where and when it is required. These settings can be adjusted directly on the thermostat or via the Unisenza Plus app, which offers remote access from a smartphone or tablet. Once the thermostats and gateway are paired with the app and connected to the network, users can control their system anytime and from anywhere, delivering convenience and flexibility.

Remote access also allows real-time adjustments and complete oversight of system performance. Users can ensure their home is warm and comfortable on arrival without wasting energy heating unoccupied rooms. This not only reduces energy bills but also lowers the building’s carbon footprint, contributing to long-term environmental benefits.

Q. What is the role of the various smart underfloor heating controls?
Underfloor heating is already highly efficient due to its low flow temperatures and its natural tendency to self-regulate as the room approaches the set temperature. This makes it particularly effective in well-insulated buildings. However, a thermostat is still essential for proper control, and efficiency can be further enhanced with smart technology.

A smart thermostat provides a convenient way to maintain the ideal temperature based on user requirements. The wireless Unisenza Plus room thermostat is simple to install and activates heating only when needed. Features such as geolocation help prevent unnecessary energy use by turning the system on or off based on user presence. When connected to the Unisenza Plus gateway, the thermostats can be configured through the intuitive app and linked to other Unisenza Plus components, including the wireless 2-Channel Programmer, electronic TRV heads for radiators, and additional accessories

The Unisenza Plus wiring centre allows for the control of up to eight thermostats (zones) with a maximum of three actuators per thermostat. If more than three connections are required per thermostat, for example in large rooms, several zones can also be combined onto one thermostat. The individual thermostats can be assigned to the switching outputs, either manually on the wiring centre or conveniently via the app. The wiring centre is equipped with voltage-free outputs for controlling a pump, boiler or heat pump.

Q. How can installers upgrade to smart underfloor heating controls?
Existing underfloor heating systems can reap the benefits of smart underfloor heating controls, and it’s easy to make the switch. Usually the existing thermostat(s) and wiring centre can quite simply be replaced by smart controls, such as the ones in the Unisenza Plus wireless range, without having to change or adapt the wiring. Regardless of how the existing thermostats were originally wired, Unisenza Plus does not require any wiring, as communication between the devices is completely wireless.

Q. How does a customer use smart underfloor heating controls?
Smart controls are designed to be simple and intuitive. Heating can be managed directly on the control device, or through a smartphone or tablet app. Once the controls and gateway are installed and linked to the Unisenza Plus app, users can instantly access heat distribution and energy data, set custom schedules, and tailor temperatures for every room.

Unisenza Plus is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Home, enabling voice-activated control for even greater convenience.

Q. Are these controls future-proof?
Flexibility is crucial when future-proofing HVAC systems. Smart underfloor heating controls are straightforward to integrate into an existing installation, and choosing a complete solution such as Unisenza Plus allows users to upgrade at their own pace.

Once the central component—the Unisenza Plus gateway—is installed, any compatible device can be added, from underfloor heating controls to boiler receivers and electronic TRV heads. Upgrades can be completed all at once or gradually to suit budgets and schedules, making it possible for any property to achieve a fully tailored heating solution.

The Unisenza Plus range uses the latest Zigbee 3.0 wireless technology, which enhances communication range and reduces energy consumption. It also supports over-the-air (OTA) updates, ensuring that devices always run the most recent software version and can receive new features and software performance improvements.
