It has been 30 years since the launch of the Uponor Q&E (Quick & Easy) System and to celebrate, GF Building Flow Solutions (formerly Uponor) is giving one reader the chance to win a cosy branded hoodie and a Just Eat voucher worth £100.
The Uponor Q&E (Quick & Easy) Shrink-Fit is a jointing system for PE-X pipe which can be used for the hygienic delivery of drinking water, heating systems and chilled water systems. The concept was introduced to offer installers a fast, reliable and permanent pipe jointing solution that removes the need for hot works, adhesives, fluxes or sealants.
The company says that this can be achieved thanks to the elastic characteristics and thermal memory of the Uponor PE-Xa pipes: when an Uponor PE-Xa pipe is expanded with a compatible tool, its structure means it strives to return within a short time back into its original form. As such, when using the Q&E Shrink-Fit fitting, the pipe serves as the seal material by resuming its original shape to produce a bond, which according to the company, is stronger than the pipe itself.
Installation
1. Cut: Cut the PEX pipe to the size required using standard pipe cutters.
2. Expand: Place the Q&E ring around the pipe (the stop edge allows for accurate positioning) and use the Milwaukee expansion tool to expand the pipe.
3. Connect: Add the Q&E fitting and wait 30 seconds for the pipework to shrink back around the fitting to form an airtight seal.
Fit and forget
There are no O-rings or any other moving parts that could potentially fail, which the company says minimises the potential for leak liability, system repair and maintenance costs.
According to the company the design has a connection system that provides installers with the confidence that the system is 100% secure. This, it says, is thanks to the product’s fittings which have a visible stop point to ensure they are pushed on far enough. Even on smaller sized connections, the system can withstand combined pulling forces of up to 1,300Kg, according to the manufacturer.
Flexibility
The company says that Q&E can also be used to connect copper, steel and other plastic based systems including other Uponor pipe systems such as the MLCP or Riser. It is available in a range of high-performance plastic polyphenylsulfone (PPSU) and threaded brass fittings for pipe dimensions ranging from 12-63 mm sizes to suit each application.
