Xylem raises awareness for World Toilet Day

On November 19 Xylem will be participating in World Toilet Day, to help raise awareness for the 2.5 billion people around the world who still lack access to clean, safe sanitation facilities.

Wastewater has reportedly changed in the last decade. The objects being thrown into the toilet today is said to be an increasing problem for pumping stations. Too many solids such as household waste, sanitary products and damp toilet paper, but also food residues are often found in the rafts of wastewater treatment plants or are clogging pumping stations, pipelines and channels.

Rene Prins, Business Development Director at Xylem Europe, said: “Using World Toilet Day for Enlightenment is a good opportunity to raise awareness in being more cautious in the handling of the waste. In industrialized nations we struggle with the challenges that come with modern wastewater. Lots of food, fat, oils, household waste and above all damp toilet paper are let out with indifference. Solids and lubricants that enter the sewerage system become difficult to manage for urban drainage and wastewater treatment plants. In addition, the increasing climatic changes such as heavy rains, as well as dry periods, put a strain on the wastewater systems leading to more frequent blockages.”

Xylem aims to solve critical water challenges by offering intelligent solutions and technologies for transporting wastewater. The latest development from Xylem is reportedly the world’s first wastewater pumping system with built-in intelligence, the Flygt Concertor.

The Concertor is a smart interconnected wastewater pumping system that senses the operating conditions of its environment, adapts its performance in real time and provides feedback to pumping station operators. The system also features a built-in sump and pipe-cleaning features – said to be a first for a wastewater pumping system. The built-in intelligence has also been designed to make it easier to set up and operate, as well as allowing for a significantly smaller footprint.

Rene continued: “We have the right systems to achieve trouble-free pumping. By being a dedicated leader in the water and wastewater industry, we realize how important it is to educate society on the correct use of a toilet. Xylem is widely known in the water and wastewater industry for their innovative brands such as Flygt, Lowara, Godwin, Wedeco, Sanitaire, Leopold to name few. With Watermark, Xylem corporate citizen and social investment program, the company is committed to providing and protecting water resources for communities around the world.”
