Viega launches guide to connecting steel pipework

A new CIBSE approved CPD module on steel pipework installation has been launched by Viega. Aimed at M&E professionals, it provides an overview of selection parameters, and connection methods.

Steel pipework has many applications for building services. However, the material itself and the components included in the system must be selected carefully, installed and commissioned correctly. This includes the choice of pipe connection method, as this will have an impact on the speed and cost of installation as well as the quality and longevity of the system.

Scott James, Director at Viega, comments: “With pipework methods evolving, tried and trusted traditional approaches are no longer always the best option for the installer, the client or the system itself. The launch of the new CPD aims to ensure that all engineers and installers are well informed about the modern installation methods available and the benefits of using it for steel pipework.”

The CPD provides an overview of the pipe material, its manufacture, selection criteria and a summary of the relevant regulations. It also outlines the guidance offered in Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers, CIBSE Guide B: Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, which provides the best practice solutions for system design and maintenance and also covers heating and hot water systems.

The CPD then examines traditional pipe connection methods, such as treading and welding, and their advantages and disadvantages for installation. The presentation subsequently compares these with modern press connection technology, offering an overview of its installation process, the range of suitable materials, sizes and applications, and health and safety advantages. The CPD demonstrates the speed of installation, time and costs benefits in practice using evidence from independent testing and a case study example.

The CPD can be delivered in person or via a video conference by a member of the Viega technical team. There is an opportunity for a Q&A after the CPD is completed.
