The Canadian based Sandman Hotel Group has called upon the comprehensive support of Marley Plumbing & Drainage to provide a total soil and waste water management solution for the conversion of a former university building, to help create its first hotel in Scotland.
The St Andrews Street building in the centre of Aberdeen, which was purchased from The Robert Gordon University, is undergoing a £20 million transformation by Sandman’s development arm, Northland Properties, turning it into a stylish four-star 218 room destination. It will feature 61 suites, a restaurant and corporate quality conference facilities.
With the former education building stripped back to its concrete shell and floors, Northland began framing the guest bedrooms and other spaces using lightweight steel partitioning.
It was an early call to the St Andrews Street site by Marley’s area Project Sales Manager, Stephen Millar, who introduced Northland to the manufacturer’s comprehensive range, and began a close working relationship between the two companies.
Marley’s first involvement was to assist the Canadian client in revising its initial drawings and specifications to meet the Scottish Building Standards; adjusting pipe sizes in respect of the soil stacks and ensuring all water regulations would comply. The manufacturer also proposed the use of several innovative systems such as its Multikwik sanitary frames and specialist shower drains.
Marley’s Equator PE-X flexible plumbing is being used for all of the hot and cold water services, while the manufacturer is also supplying all of the soil and waste systems for the fit out. The latter includes the installation of individual soil and waste stacks for every bedroom – to reduce noise transmission to adjoining rooms – into which the Multikwik sanitary frames connect to carry the wall hung WC pans. The walk in showers have been created using the 650mm Multikwik shower drain, followed by the manufacturer’s own shower tray and one of the special inserts which has been developed to simplify the laying of floor tiles.
Below ground, all of the wastewater drainage is being routed into Marley 110mm and 150mm drains, including manhole chambers and other fittings.
Unusually, Northland Properties is using all directly employed labour on the site and as such, Marley has provided training for all personnel involved with the installation of its systems.
Mark Ahmed, who is Northland’s Project Manager for all of the plumbing and drainage work, commented: “We have enjoyed a very good rapport between ourselves and Marley as well as the local merchant; they’ve come out to site every time we have needed a solution to something, and also provided detailed training to those guys who have never seen the products before. This is a huge site but everything has arrived when we’ve needed it and nothing has ever been too much bother.”
Phase one of the work on the Sandman Hotel in Aberdeen is due to complete towards the end of this year.
