Ian Trott, Head of UK Training Solutions at Baxi, provides an insight into fitting a pre-plumbed air source heat pump (ASHP) cylinder.
Q. Why would installers choose to fit a pre-plumbed air source heat pump (ASHP) cylinder?
Choosing a pre-plumbed ASHP cylinder like Baxi’s new model helps installers save time on installation as much of the pipework and fittings are already in place. The cylinder comes pre-wired, further simplifying and reducing time needed on electrical connections.
Q. Do I still have to wire in the heat pump?
Yes, although the wiring is much reduced. The requirements for the mains power feed remain the same as normal but most of the system wiring is pre done on the cylinder, leaving just a communication wire between the cylinder control box and the heat pump.
Q. What sizes are the Baxi pre-plumbed ASHP cylinder available in?
Baxi’s new pre-plumbed ASHP cylinder is available in capacities of 170, 210, 250 or 300 litres to ensure installers have the flexibility needed for a wide range of projects, with its compact footprint also enabling installation into an airing cupboard or smaller space.
Q. How does it work on low temperature heating?
Baxi’s pre-plumbed ASHP cylinder features an extra-large coil designed specifically for use with heat pumps to deliver faster heating times and increased hot water availability. The cylinder is well-suited to homes with multiple bathrooms thanks to high flow rate of up to 76L/min and its in-built back-up immersion heater.
Q. Does the Baxi pre-plumbed ASHP cylinder work with all Baxi products?
The new pre-plumbed ASHP cylinder is designed to work hand-in-hand with the latest Baxi ASHP range, combining great efficiency with the ultimate in control.
Q. How many heating zones can it control?
The intuitive integrated controller enables direct control of domestic hot water and central heating. With the addition of an optional accessory kit, up to three Zones can be controlled.
Q. Can the homeowner control the cylinder of required?
The homeowner can access remote comfort control when the cylinder is used alongside the Baxi uSense 2 Smart Room Thermostat.
Q. What’s the difference between a normal cylinder and an ASHP cylinder?
Both are manufactured from “Duplex” stainless steel for superior quality and corrosion resistance. The cylinder and controls come with a two-year warranty as standard, with 10-years on the inner tank. An ASHP cylinder comes with all the control and safety features you would expect from an unvented cylinder. The main difference is the coil in the tank which would be much larger than a in a standard cylinder. This allows the lower temperature heat pump to heat the water in the correct time.
