Knipex’s tools designed to make life easier for plumbers

PHPI caught up with KNIPEX UK’s Product & Technical Support, Jason Cunningham, to get his take on the tools that make life easier, safer and more efficient for plumbing and heating installers.

Q: Working under sinks or behind pipe runs isn’t exactly spacious – what tools make life easier and more comfortable when you’re squeezed into those tight spots?
Long reach needle nose pliers are very useful in confined spaces. Where you cannot get your hands inside a tight area, they give you that extra reach that is so often needed. If you’re working with restricted sight, then the KNIPEX Smart Grip (85 01 250) will always find its gripping position and can be used with either your left or right hand. They remove the need for manual adjustment on the workpiece, meaning I can work quicker and use them one handed if there is limited space.

Q: Corroded or stubborn fittings are a common headache on repair jobs. Are there particular tools that you would highlight for tackling seized nuts, bolts or pipe connections without causing damage?
KNIPEX’s TwinGrip slip joint pliers are well-known for their ability to tackle stuck nuts and bolts, especially those with worn profiles. The design allows for efficient front and side gripping, making them a reliable tool for holding and loosening stuck workpieces in any situation. The high-grip front jaw, with its robust teeth and high gear ratio, and the push-button adjustment, ensure the tool’s effectiveness, even in confined spaces.

One tool in the KNIPEX range that also springs to mind, is a high-tech multiple slip joint spanner known as the Raptor (87 41 250). This has 15 points of adjustment and three points of contact, and thanks to the jaw geometry developed by KNIPEX, it clamps onto the component securely so you don’t have to press the pliers handle together but instead can put all your energy into the desired movement.

Q: Many plumbers now deal with a wide variety of pipe materials and fittings on a daily basis. Are there any ‘multi-purpose/ all-rounder’ tools that offer versatility across different types of jobs without compromising on quality?
With the many sizes of plastic pipe that plumbers have to use every day, the KNIPEX BiX® is a fantastic tool to have in your tool bag. It will cut from 20mm up to 50mm, fits comfortably in one hand and can also be used for sealing and drip sleeves.

The DP50 Pipe Cutter is a recent addition to our range and is intended for cutting and simultaneous chamfering of domestic drainpipes with diameters of 32, 40 and 50mm (up to 2.4mm wall thickness). It comes with a double-ended blade that can be changed without any tools so it’s a really handy addition to your toolbox.

Q. Are there any underappreciated tools that you think more plumbers should have in their kitbags?
I think one underappreciated tool we have is the Cobra®. I know people will say ‘we all know about the Cobra®, but the one we are all familiar with is the grey, atramentised version. Not many people know we also have a chrome-plated version (87 03 250) that adds another layer of protection against rust or water damage, so is the ideal version for a plumbing technician.

Q: Electrical safety is becoming more important for plumbers. What tools should they be reaching for to stay safe and what should they look out for when choosing them?
A: For electrical work, VDE tools are a must. Each item is tested to 10,000volts and rated to 1,000V in line with the international standard IEC 60900. Certain markings on VDE products are vital for it to be compliant. These are the manufacturer, article or part number, the year of production, the test centre details, a double triangle symbol with 1000V and finally the IEC 60900 displayed on them. Look for the red and yellow handles within our range.

Q: When you’re working up ladders or in roof spaces, dropping a tool isn’t just annoying, it’s dangerous. How does KNIPEX help plumbers keep their tools safe and secure?
Our new KNIPEXtend comfort grip handles offer the option to adapt any tool with a tether attachment to prevent them falling from height, and there are a variety of lanyards and clips available to keep your tools and anyone who may be below you, safe from harm.
