Tool storage: tool rolls

Tool storage: tool rolls

Compact, protective and easy to tailor to the job, tool rolls offer more than simple storage. David Barnes at KNIPEX explores why this practical format works so well.

Tool storage has changed a lot over the years but one of the simplest options has held its ground: the tool roll. While boxes, bags and rucksacks all have their place, there’s a strong case for keeping a tool roll in the van or on the job. They fold down small, weigh very little and keep everyday tools secure without rattling around. For tradespeople who like to work with a pared-back selection, a roll also helps to build a personal kit that’s easy to grab at the start of the day.

A tool roll makes sense where space is tight. Once unrolled, everything is laid out clearly so you’re not digging to the bottom of a box or patting every pocket to find the right tool. Holding tools in a fabric wrap also stops tools from wearing through jacket linings or trouser pockets, something anyone who has carried pliers loose can relate to. Because each compartment keeps the tool in place, it reduces unnecessary knocks and prolongs the life of the kit inside. For many trades, that combination of protection and portability is what earns tool rolls a place alongside heavier storage options.

There is also something practical about being able to build a roll to suit a particular job. Some contractors keep a few different rolls ready to go: one for reactive repairs, one for callouts and another for planned work. Loading up an empty roll with a tailored everyday-carry set means you only take what you actually need, which helps to cut down on weight and keeps workflow smooth. That simplicity is often what wins people over. A roll doesn’t replace every storage system, but it does bridge the gap between carrying a handful of tools and committing to a full kitbag.

Flat opening
KNIPEX has a choice of empty rolls for customised kits as well as several pre-filled sets that group tools by trade or task. Made from tough polyester with a hook and loop fastening, each roll opens flat so the tools inside are easy to see and quick to access. Folded up, they’re compact enough to fit in a rucksack or service pouch without any bulk.

One of the most popular options is the KNIPEX Cobra Set, which brings together three sizes of the well-known Cobra water pump pliers: 150, 250 and 300mm with their button-adjustment, secure self-locking action and hardened teeth that bite firmly on pipes and nuts. The smallest 150 mm model offers a surprising 30mm gripping capacity and reaches into tight spaces where larger pliers would struggle. At the other end of the scale, the 300mm version brings serious torque and handles pipes up to 70mm in diameter with ease.

For those who prefer to build their own everyday set, there’s an empty roll available with four compartments ready for a personalised layout. It’s a neat way to organise common grab-and-go tools without them ending up scattered across the van.

Pre-filled
Another popular pre-filled choice is the Set of Pliers Wrenches, which includes the 180, 250 and 300mm pliers wrenches. These tools replace entire sets of metric and imperial spanners. With smooth jaws that won’t damage plated fittings and a push-button adjustment that locks firmly onto the workpiece, they grip, press and bend with remarkable strength.

KNIPEX also has a TwinGrip Slip Joint Pliers Set in a roll, which includes three lengths from 150 to 250mm. TwinGrip pliers are known for their dual front and side gripping function, suited to dealing with stuck screws or worn bolts. The slim head shape helps reach confined spots while the sliding box-joint lets users adjust quickly to different workpiece sizes.

Protection
Across all of these sets, the tools are organised, visible and protected. These rolls stop sharp edges or hard corners from snagging inside bags and importantly, avoid the clutter that can creep into toolboxes over time. When tools are laid out flat, it’s immediately obvious if something is missing which creates better habits and saves the awkward moment of discovering too late that the right pliers aren’t in the van.

There will always be a place for toolboxes and larger storage systems, but the tool roll continues to earn its keep because it answers a simple need: a lightweight, durable and organised way to carry the tools you rely on most. For trades who need a minimum of kit for a maximum amount of tasks, that convenience is hard to beat.
